And a lot of snow will fall before the storm is done with Fairfield County, according to the National Weather Service. A Winter Storm Watch is in place from midnight Wednesday until 6 p.m. Thursday with a total snow accumulation of 6 to 10 inches, more in some locations, the weather service said.
The heavy snow could cause school cancellations and hazardous travel conditions for commuters on Thursday. Poor visibility and blowing and drifting snow are possible.
For the rest of Tuesday, rainy and freezing rain conditions will continue, with fog possible, as temperatures hovering in the mid-30s. Temperatures will continue to rise overnight, with an unseasonably high temperature in the mid-50s by Wednesday under cloudy skies.
There is a 60 percent chance of rain by Wednesday evening, as the temperature begins to drop toward freezing, and a 90 percent chance of snow after 10 p.m. with an overnight low of about 28 degrees.
The new snow accumulation overnight will be 1 to 3 inches, with snow continuing Thursday, mainly before 1 p.m. Another 5 to 9 inches of snow could fall before the storm is through. The snowfall is expected to be heavy at times.
The temperature will fall to about 16 degrees by night-time as the snow tapers off. That would bring a total of 3 to 8 inches for the duration of the storm.
Friday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 26 degrees, with a 30 percent chance of light snow after 11 p.m. and into Saturday morning.
