GREENWICH, Conn. UConn baseball star L.J. Mazzilli will be honored as Greenwich Sports Person of the Year at the seventh annual Fairfield County SportsNight dinner Oct. 17. As starting second baseman and leadoff hitter, Mazzilli was a catalyst for one of the most successful seasons in UConn baseball history. He is the son of Lee Mazzilli, a former major league ballplayer and manager. Mazzilli, 21, had a stellar regular season at the plate and continued to wield his hot stick in the postseason while helping the Huskies maintain a sustained run in the NCAA Tournament. The consistent Mazzilli had one 10-game hitting streak, two nine-game hitting streaks and batted .338 in a team-high 275 at-bats. He had 23 doubles, 93 hits and 43 RBIs in 65 games. The sophomore infielder also had a .392 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage of .491. Mazzilli was named to the All-Big East Second Team, he was honored as an NEIBA Second Team All-Star and was a member of the 2011 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team that had an 11-2-1 record this past summer. Mazzilli went 6-for-18 (a .333 average) with one home run and a double while helping the Huskies win the Big East championship and secure a berth in the NCAA Tournament. And he was even hotter in NCAA play, batting .364 with five RBIs. Included among his 12 hits were two doubles and one triple as he helped lead the Huskies to their first-ever Super Regional appearance. Mazzilli graduated from the IMG Pendleton School in Bradenton, Fla. He also attended Greenwich High School and Iona Prep. The newest members of the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame and 15 Sports Persons of the Year from county communities will be recognized. Sports personalities slated to attend are former Yankees pitcher Tommy John, ex-NY Giants football player Bob Hyland, Lowes Moore, who played with the New Jersey Nets, former world boxing champion Travis Simms and Wes Matthews, a two-time NBA champion with the L.A. Lakers.
