The long-running Volvo of Stamford Tour de Greenwich entered its 26th year in grand fashion Sunday. A clear, crisp morning greeted more than 400 cyclists at the starting line at Greenwich High School. According to race organizer Mickey Yardis, it was the biggest turnout for the 20-mile race in several years.
"It's pretty exciting entering the second quarter-century with this event. I can't believe I've been out here that long doing this," Yardis said. The turnout "is a testament to the cycling interest in this area, and we're happy to be out here."
The 26th edition of the tour boasted a scenic course through north Greenwich that was mapped to accommodate serious racers and casual riders in good shape. Yardis' fitness equipment store, Threads and Treads, is the lead sponsor in the annual 10-event Greenwich Cup. The events have become a yearly staple for racing competitors and people looking to stay fit.
"The triathlon is our signature event, but this is really a one-of-a-kind thing where cyclists of all levels can come out and mix it up," Yardis said. "We've got experienced riders and weekend warriors alike out here. We have a good time out here."
The Tour de Greenwich is the seventh of the 10 Volvo of Stamford Greenwich Cup events. Next on the schedule is the 13th annual Susannah's Run on Oct. 10. All proceeds from the 5k walk/run on Tod's Point go to the Susannah Chase Memorial Scholarship Fund, which is awarded annually to a female graduate from Greenwich High School.
