Greenwich Skaters Help Team Take 5th at Worlds

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – The Skyliners Junior line completed its spectacular season by finishing fifth at the Junior World Challenge Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden.

"I am very proud of my skaters for all of their hard work this season. To be recognized as the fifth best team in the world is a wonderful accomplishment," Coach Josh Babb said after last week's competition.

It is the pre-eminent synchronized skating competition in the world. Eighteen teams from 13 countries competed in this championship, which is sanctioned by the International Skating Union.

Greenwich’s Brooke Abbott, Mairead Brock and Alexandra Scarpulla skate on the Skyliners Junior line.

Competing as Team USA 1, the Skyliners skated a strong performance Friday of their short program, set to the music of Lady Gaga's "The Edge of Glory." Their score of 47.21 points placed them fifth against the strong international field and only 2.7 points out of third place.

"I am pleased with the way they skated tonight and to be in fifth place puts them in a good position going into the free skate," Babb said.

The competition finished Saturday with the free skate. The Skyliners skated to music from the movie the "Black Swan." Their elegant free skate was awarded 92.76 points, for a total score of 139.97 points. Unfortunately, this was not enough for the Skyliners to move up against the other top competitors. Team Fintastic won, and Team Muskateers finished second, both from Finland. Canada's Les Supremes was awarded the bronze. The other member of the Team USA's delegation, Team Braemar of Braemar, Minn., took fourth.

The Skyliners competed at the Junior World Challenge Cup as Team USA 1 because they won the Junior World Selection Competition in January.

Clinics and tryouts for the 2012-13 season start mid-March and run through April 15.  Visit the Skyliners at www.skylinerssynchro.com for more information.
