Jordana Adler found a perfect way to combine her skating passion with her Girl Scout project. The result is a beautiful mural for the Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink in Greenwich.
Adler, a member of the Skyliners synchronized skating team, will host a reception Friday at the rink for people who helped create and want to see her mural. It will hang in a sitting area at Hamill, which is named after the hometown Olympic gold-medal-winning figure skater.
I talked to many leaders in the community about how I could contribute to Greenwich in some way, said Jordana, a 16-year-old junior at Greenwich High School. After speaking with rink manager, they said theyd love to have a mural to inspire young skaters and help beautify the rink.
Adler is also making a promotional video about the rink. For her work, Jordana will receive the Gold Award from the Girl Scouts. The award, which fewer than 6 percent of the members earn, is the highest achievement in Girl Scouts. The project is something that fulfills a need within a girls community [whether local or global], creates change, and hopefully, is something that becomes ongoing, according to the Girl Scouts website. The Girl Scouts of Connecticut approved Adlers project.
Her mural is 6 feet high and 8 feet wide. She had a friend draw figures on paper and project the image onto the masonite. Adler then painted it with many friends and supporters in February and March. The artwork includes different skating genres, including hockey players, figure skaters and, of course, synchronized skaters. I wanted to represent every kind of skating, Jordana said.
Adler has spent much of her free time at Hamill over the years. She started figure skating when she was in the second grade and has been with the Skyliners for six years. She was part of the clubs Novice team that finished in fourth place at the recent national championships and won a pewter medal. I just love being part of a team, Jordana said. The friends I have made and working together with other girls has been great. Its so easy to fall in love with synchronized skating.
Jordanas passion for skating will be out for everyone to see at Hamill. This was my first real big art project, Jordana said. Im happy with the way it turned out and so appreciate everyones help.
