Rocky Point swim coach Terry Lowe knew his team faced an uphill climb in its bid to take the Fairfield County Swimming League title from Roxbury. But even though his squad finished second, the veteran coach was far from disappointed.
"We had a good meet, and we had a lot of good swims,'' Lowe said. "We're happy with the day's work."
Alex Walsh was terrific for Rocky Point. She won the 8-and-under 25-meter butterfly, breaststroke and backstroke, and her time of 20.46 in the breaststroke broke a record that had stood since 1976. Sue Lenczycki set the standard, and Julie Sweitzer tied it in 1982. Alex also helped the 200-freestyle relay team to a second-place finish.
Promising 14-year-old Jaimie Miller won the 100-meter individual medley, the 50-meter backstroke and 50-meter freestyle. She also helped the 200-medley relay team to a fifth-place finish.
With Alex and Jaimie leading the way, Rocky Point finished first in scoring among girls' teams with 473.5 points. Roxbury finished second. The Stamford club won the overall title with 962.5 points, followed by Rocky Point with 783.5 points. Long Ridge took third with 723. Riverside was sixth, and Innis Arden was 10th.
Riverside's Lauren Church won the 17-and-under butterfly and led off the third-place 200-meter medley relay team. Innis Arden won the 200 freestyle relay with Grace Leigh, Riley Ennis, Katie Evans and Jesse Evans. Complete results are available here.
