The Greenwich High School football team knew after losing to Trumbull in week five that it would have to win the remainder of its games. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, four-time defending state champion New Canaan loomed. The Cardinals had been on the rebound, and many expected Friday night's game to be closer. But New Canaan dominated with a punishing passing game, wiping out Greenwich's postseason hopes, 42-20.
"We've never had [a loss] like this against New Canaan," Greenwich head coach Rich Albonizio said. "It was like men against boys out there. We were outclassed and outplayed. They're way above us at this point."
The game quickly got out of hand for Greenwich (5-3), as New Canaan (7-1) scored on the third play of the game on its second drive. In all, New Canaan went into halftime with just seven first downs but leading 42-7.
Rams' quarterback Matthew Milano tore up the Greenwich secondary, completing passes at will. He finished the night with 293 yards passing and five touchdowns, including three to his favorite target, Kevin Macari.
Greenwich's only score in the first half came on a rare New Canaan mistake, when Milano fumbled at the two-yard line. Running back Shane Nastahowski rumbled into the end zone for the only score against New Canaan's starters. Greenwich managed to score on its first possession of the second half, but it took almost eight minutes. Mark Kelley scored on a five-yard run. David Josephson added a nice 21-yard catch in the corner of the end zone to make the score more respectable as time expired.
The loss effectively closes the book on any chance of the Cardinals making the playoffs, barring a miracle collapse by higher ranked teams in the final two weeks.
