Greenwich's Tischler Leads Manhattanville Golfers

Despite three Top 10 individual finishes and a team score of 302, the Manhattanville men's golf team settled for second place at the Williams Invitational, held Saturday and Sunday at the par-71 Taconic Golf Course.

Entering the final day tied with Salem State for first place in the 18-team field, the Valiants shot a team score of 302 on day two but ended up eight shots behind the Vikings, who carded a 294 to finish at 592. Manhattanville's two-day score of 600 was five shots better than the host Ephs and also tied the program-record two-day score set just two weeks ago at the Trinity (Conn.) Invitational.

Graduate student George Tischler of Greenwich, Conn., led Manhattanville with a five-over 76 on Sunday, giving him a two-day score of 146 and tying him for third place overall out of 97 golfers, three strokes behind individual medalist Nick Zolotas of Salem State. Tischler’s weekend score of 146 also set a new program standard for a two-day total.

The Valiants finished the weekend as the only team under-par on the par-fives, as the five Manhattanville entries combined to shoot -3. The squad also ranked second on the par-threes (+11) and third on the par-fours (+46).

Junior Nick Sica of Staten Island, N.Y., also recorded his first top-five finish as a Valiant, assuming sole possession of fifth place with a 73 on Sunday.

Senior Mike Cresci of Belvedere, Calif., made a move up the leaderboard with a 74 on day two, finishing in a tie for ninth place with a two-day total of 150 to move up seven spots and crack the Top 10 for the second time this season.

Sophomore Juan Ayala of Guayaquil, Ecuador, finished the weekend in a tie for 31st place after a Sunday 79 put him at 157 for the weekend, and junior Dan Skelton of Cambridgeshire, England, carded rounds of 83 and 81 to finish in a tie for 61st place.

Manhattanville will take part in its only dual match of the season on Thursday afternoon, as the Valiants battle with NYU at The Apawamis Club in Rye.
