Legion Team Inches Towards Zone Title

The Greenwich Legion senior baseball team took another step towards clinching the top spot and a first round bye in the state tournament with a 4-0 win over Norwalk on Thursday evening. One more win, combined with a Norwalk loss, will lock up Zone Four for Greenwich.

Starter Ryan Carr crafted a brilliant complete-game two-hit shutout, striking out five and walking just one over seven innings. Both teams were held hitless in the first three innings until Dave Telling bounced a single in the fourth. After a ground rule double and intentional walk, Greg Bayliss pushed across the game's first run with a groundout to short.

The next batter, Rob Catalano, reached on a throwing error leading to Greenwich's second run. Greenwich added two more in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Connor Mac, who also scored on another throwing error.

The win lifted Greenwich to 21-3, while Norwalk fell to 20-3. Greenwich needs to win just one of their two games against Norwalk in Saturday's doubleheader at Greenwich High School to clinch the Zone. Game one starts at 10 a.m.
