TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- AJ Wolf's final month as a student/athlete at The Hackley School will be filled with flying shots, discuses and a diploma hand off before he takes a summer break and heads off to Duke University in the fall.
Wolf, who lives in nearby Greenwich, Conn., is a football star and track and field athlete who specializes in throwing the shot and discus in the winter and spring. The senior is coming off a double win at last weekend's 45th Glenn D. Loucks Memorial Track and Field Games with his eye on a few high school career-ending marks.
"My goals for the rest of the season are to throw 60 feet in shot put and 190 feet in discus," Wolf said. "Past that, I want to make All-American at New Balance Nationals in June."
Wolf's incremental goals are within sight and within his long extended throwing reach. He tosses the shot 59-feet, 4-inches and flipped the discus 186-3 in his Loucks Games gold medal performances and is peaking at just the right time.
"You want to be in your best shape, and peaking (at season's end)," Wolf said. "Getting really quick and explosive, not so much strong and slow. Loucks provided a great field. It is one of the best quality places to throw and might even be my favorite."
Wolf, who inked his college national letter of intent with Duke earlier this year, played on the offensive line, ran the ball at fullback, snapped for punts and also kicked for the Hornets. The versatile 6-foot-4, 250 pounder recorded 98 tackles, had three sacks and two fumble recoveries. He was selected a first-team all state by the New York Sportswriters Association along with several other select Westchester athletes and was a Golden Dozen selection as one of the area's top student/athlete football players.
With Duke and his future just three months away, Wolf will meet the next several weeks with some goals left to accomplish and a history of success.
