Greenwich Woman Is Second Again at Ridgefield Half

RIDGEFIELD, Conn. – There's no doubt the marathon is Sharon Vos' best, and probably favorite, distance. With many age group wins at the Boston and ING-NYC Marathons, the Old Greenwich runner holds her own against the best in the nation at 26.2 miles.

As part of her preparation for the November five-borough run in the Big Apple, she often runs the Ridgefield Pamby Half Marathon to gauge her fitness, usually coming away with a trophy.

This year was no different, as Vos used a consistent, even pace to overtake early pacesetter Jeniffer McGowan to place second overall in 1:31:33, a little more than two minutes behind winner Mary Zengo of Wilton.

"I was happy with the way I ran, except for my time – I wish that had been a little faster," Vos said afterward. Last year, under more challenging weather, she ran nearly a minute faster. Still, her performance showed that she's on course for next month's marathon in New York, which she'll run for the first time with her two triplet sisters.

After an early morning downpour, the weather changed to almost perfect autumn running conditions and brought out 472 finishers. Among them was actor Anthony Edwards of "Top Gun" and "ER" fame. Edwards was running in support of Shoe4Africa, an organization that supports fitness and health initiatives in Kenya. As part of the effort, nearly 1,000 pairs of shoes were collected at the race.
