Greenwich U15 Ruth Team Reaches District Finals

GREENWICH, Conn. – The Greenwich U-15 Babe Ruth team didn't have its best stuff on the mound or at the plate Thursday for the District 1 losers bracket final. But it was nearly perfect in the field and aggressive on the base paths, exploiting six Darien errors en route to a wild 9-6 win.

"After the shellacking we took yesterday [15-4 at the hands of Stamford], the boys came in with a different attitude," Greenwich head coach Larry Jones said. "They really wanted to play Stamford again because they played the first half of that game well. They were determined to win this one."

Greenwich was outhit by Darien 10-5, but Greenwich kept finding ways to reach base and force bad throws. Nearly every time a runner was on, he was stealing the next base.

Errors haunted Darien, leading to seven unearned runs. Darien also left seven runners on base and had a runner thrown out at home and another gunned down at third by Greenwich centerfielder Robert Morris.

Morris, who played on the varsity at St. Luke's this past school year, was a vacuum in center. He ran down several well-hit balls for outs and cut off hits that would have gone for extra bases if they had gotten by him.

Greenwich starting pitcher Erick Boender was pulled after six innings and three earned runs. Darien made things interesting in the seventh, scoring three times. It even managed to bring the tying run to the plate, but Greenwich  got out of the jam.

Greenwich advances to the Babe Ruth U-15 District One championship series against a powerful Stamford team. Game one of the three-game series begins Friday at Cubeta Stadium at 8 p.m.

"We have to hit and keep our heads in the game to beat Stamford," Morris said. "We were a little too loose the first time against them, so we'll have to focus if we want to beat them."
