GREENWICH, Conn. The summer Olympic games will come to town as the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich holds its annual Swim-A-Thon for a two-day fundraising effort this month.
We are all about fitness and fun. Swimming is the ideal, all-around exercise, and the competition is enjoyable for families, says Dawn Berrocal, aquatics director of the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich. Teams of up to eight people will compete in Olympic obstacles to earn points for a grand prize and the potential to be crowned Olympic Champion in the Pool on Friday, Feb. 24, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Pasta dinners will be available for $5 for takeout before the festivities.
At the Swim-A-Thon, the future Olympians hit the pool for such swimming challenges as relays and obstacle courses Saturday, Feb. 25, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Each swimmer has collected pledges for each lap in the pool. Prizes will be presented to swimmers who collect more than $500. Donors who make donations of $100 or more will receive event T-shirts.
These events will support the clubs aquatic programs, including staff and equipment, and will allow the club to provide quality programs for its members. With a yearly membership fee of $25, members can join the swim team and participate in special clinics, including swimming lessons, snorkeling, water polo, water ballet, kayaking, underwater hockey and lifeguard courses.
Club swimmers are asking for pledges from the community to help reach this years tidal wave of a goal of $40,000 by the end of April. The club is using Crowdrise to fundraise for the event. The community can sign up there to participate or provide a donation at online..
