RYE, N.Y. Andrew Stotesbery of Greenwich held his boys 14-and-under high-point trophy and posed for a picture Thursday, anxious to join his joyous Westchester Country Club teammates. Once the photo session concluded, Stotesbery dove into the pool to join the celebration for the Westchester County Swim Conference Championship.
It was the second consecutive title for the host as it finished with 857.50 points, outdistancing runner-up Lake Isle Swim Team with 748.50 points and Greenburgh Swim Team with 748 points.
Stotesbery finished with a perfect 60 points after his victories in the 100 freestyle (50.43 seconds), 100 backstroke (56.65 seconds) and 100 butterfly (55.41 seconds). "It feels great," said Stotesbery, 14, and a rising sophomore at Greenwich High School. "We wanted to hold onto to our spots today and the championship."
Stotesbery had a huge hand in the title with his three swims. Going into the week, he decided to switch from the breaststroke to the butterfly, and it was a major factor. He finished with his best time of the summer and was a full two seconds ahead of the runner-up.
"I haven't swam in this in a while," Stotesbery said. "I chose the fly because I felt strong in practice." He grabbed the lead on the first lap and got stronger as the race progressed.
Stotesbery was not Westchester Country Club's lone champion. Tim Perley won the boys 17-and-under breaststroke in a record time of 59.14 seconds, breaking the standard of 59.60 seconds set last year by Alex Gianino of Lake Isle Swim Team. Emma Madden won the girls 17-and-under 100 backstroke with a record time of 1:05.20 seconds, eclipsing the record of 1:06.30 set by Marilee Kiernan of the Bronxville Field Club in 2003.
Tomas Delgado won the boys 6-and-under 25-yard freestyle in 17.97 seconds, after going 20.41 seconds in the preliminaries. He also placed second in the 25 backstroke. T. Speres edged Coveleigh Club's Spencer LaFata in the boys 12-and-under 50 freestyle. Speres finished in 25 seconds to LaFata's 25.14 seconds.
