Greenwich Swimmer Breaks Two County Records

GREENWICH, Conn. – Rocky Point swimmer Gretchen Walsh re-wrote two records, one 34 years old, to lead her club to a second place finish at Monday's Fairfield County Swimming League Division 1 championships. The meet was held at Innis Arden Country Club.

Roxbury Swim Club of Stamford won the team title with 1,375.5 points. Rocky Point took second with 1,187. Riverside Yacht Club finished fourth with 624.5 and Innis Arden was sixth with 561. The top swimmers in each event advance to Saturday's season-ending championships at Roxbury in Stamford, where swimmers from all five league divisions will compete.

Gretchen Walsh won the 8-and-under 25-meter butterfly in 17.03, breaking the mark set by Katie Evans of 17.15 in 2005. She also broke Liz Baker's 1977 record in the 25-meter freestyle, swimming 15.33. Baker's time was 15.70.

Walsh also won the breaststroke while her sister, Alex, won the girls 10-and-under 100 individual medley and 25 backstroke and freestyle. Alex was also on the second-place 200 meter medley relay team.

"It was Roxbury all the way,'' Rocky Point coach Terry Lowe said. "I thought we'd finish a solid second and we did. We had a good meet with some good times."

Other individual winners for Rocky Point were Noah Sorenson, Ainsley Winget, Matthew Freeman (two events), Porter Carlson, Christian Farricker, Jamie Miller (two events), Julian Fraser and Annie Miller. Rocky Point also won the boys 200 meter freestyle relay with Sorenson, Peter Mullen, Julian Fraser and Matthew Fraser. The boys 200 medley relay won with Mullen, Eric Cullinane, Julian Fraser and Matthew Freeman, while the girls won the 200 meter freestyle relay with Winget, Kellen Carlson, Milena Meehan and Annie Miller.

Riverside battled with third place Newfield all afternoon and took fourth. Individual winners for Riverside included Lauren Church, Brighid Lewis, Nicole Rogers (two events), and Iain Edmundson (two events).

Innis Arden's individual winners included Katie Evans in two 14-and-under events. Claire Michalik won the 8-and-under 25-meter backstroke for Innis Arden.
