The Greenwich High School boys soccer team made a resounding statement Thursday with its second straight shutout of a quality team. This time the Cardinals dominated on the road, silencing a potent New Canaan offense for their seventh win in a row. The game was billed as a showdown between two of the top teams in the FCIAC, but Greenwich owned almost every minute of a dominant 3-0 win.
"We're really hitting our stride now at this point and getting healthy players back," head coach Kurt Putnam said. "We're scoring nice goals, too, which is great. The buzz and excitement on the team right now is great."
Greenwich came out with it guns blazing, as Izzie Hernandez found the net four minutes into the game. From there, the Cardinals defense smothered any chance New Canaan had. The Rams got only three shots on goal the entire game, none of which were threatening.
Hernandez fed a nice pass in the box to Reg Jones, who chipped it in for the insurance goal. New Canaan could not find any offensive life and failed to make a shot on goal in the second half. Mark Johnson made it 3-0 on an incredible 40-yard kick from the extreme right side of the field. With Greenwich's streak, Johnson said the team could take on anyone in the state.
"Our team is doing really well. We battled through injuries, and we'll play through the games," Johnson said. "If we keep making shots like we did today, nobody can beat us."
Greenwich trails only Norwalk in the FCIAC standings by two points. The Cardinals will travel to Bassick on Saturday.
