GREENWICH, Conn. Greenwich High School football fans are in for a rare treat Friday night. The Cardinals will host New London at 7 p.m. in a matchup of two of the most successful football programs in state history. It will be the first time Greenwich has ever played the powerhouse Whalers from the Eastern Connecticut Conference.
Both teams have an impressive pedigree when it comes to state championships. Greenwich has made 15 state championship appearances and won seven good for fifth all time. New London is right behind the Cardinals with 11 appearances in the state title game with five championships.
New London went to the Class M state finals last year but lost to Hillhouse, 7-0. Greenwich is in one of its longest title droughts in team history: It has not made a championship appearance since 2007.
New London (1-0) features all-state running back Kyle McKinnon, who ran for more than 1,450 yards and scored 15 touchdowns in 2010. The Whalers also sport two huge defensive ends in Voghan Larrieux (6-6, 263) and Malcolm Simmons (6-5, 235).
