Greenwich Senior Legion Eliminated from States

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Greenwich Senior Legion ace Ryan Carr pitched a stellar game in a must-win situation in the American Legion Connecticut state tournament. Unfortunately, Branford's Jeff Stoddard was even better, pitching a complete game and allowing just one earned run as the defending state champions dropped Greenwich, 4-1.

The errors that plagued the Cannons in Monday's loss to Stamford returned, costing Greenwich a shot at the state championship.

Andrew Coffey reached on an error in the top of the first and was driven in by Ryan Brennan, but that would be all the offense Greenwich would muster against Branford's big lefty.

Greenwich finished the season at 26-6 and as Zone 4 champions. That four Zone 4 teams made the tourney's final eight is a testament to how much the zone has improved, coach Mike Abate said.

"It was special. It just goes to show the strength of our zone now," Abate said. "With us, Stamford, Norwalk and Trumbull all with a shot to make the finals really shows off the competition of Zone 4."
