Greenwich Runners Take Command

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Abby Markowitz and the Greenwich girls cross country team took another big step toward showing they're for real in the 2011 season by scoring impressive individual and team wins at Fairfield Ludlowe High School on Tuesday.

Led by the one-two finish of Markowitz and freshman Sarah Fountain, the Cardinals bested the host Falcons, 18-44, as well as Norwalk, Bassick and Harding to boost their record to 10-0. The boys also picked up four wins in the meet to keep their record in the black.

"That's the first time we've been 10-0 in more than a decade," said longtime Cardinal coach Bill Mongovan. "The girls have been getting better each week, and now we're home for some real tests against some of the better teams in the league."

The team's rise mirrors that of its top runner, Markowitz, who is running cross country for the first time as a senior and showing that her track credentials translate well to the overland sport. Markowitz proved that her win over defending FCIAC champion Heather Moriarity of Ludlowe at the Wilton Invitational two weeks ago was not a fluke. Running on Moriarity's home course where the Falcon senior set two course records last year, Markowitz and Fountain were content to follow through the first mile before pulling away to a decisive victory.

Mongovan was still unsure whether he would take his team to Saturday's Wickham Invitational in Manchester, site of the state championships. "It would be good to get a practice run on the course," he said.

Complete results of the meet are available on the Club Connecticut website.
