Greenwich Runner, Team Take Third at States

GREENWICH, Conn. – After Abby Markowitz completed her first season of cross country competition, the question is: What took you so long?

The Greenwich High School senior, who waited until her final year of school to compete on the trails, left a tantalizing question of "what if?" Or, what might she have accomplished with more than a single season under her belt?

But her achievements are still significant. On Tuesday, Markowitz ran in the delayed State Open championship at Hammonasset Beach State Park. She added a third place state finish to the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference title she won last month.

Markowitz covered the 5,000-meter seaside course in 18:56, just 21 seconds behind the winning time of Reid Watson of Glastonbury. With her placement and that of teammate Sarah Fountain (18th, 19:28), the Cardinals placed third as a team with 149 points. Conference titlists Ridgefield continued its winning ways by outdistancing Guilford, 83-107.

The top six teams and 25 individuals will compete in the New England championships on Saturday in Rhode Island. Complete results of the meet are posted on the NorthEast Sportstiming website.
