Greenwich Ripken 12s Fall Short in States

GREENWICH, Conn. — The Greenwich 12-year-old Cal Ripken All-Star team scratched and clawed its way to a thrilling District 1 championship two weeks ago over Norwalk. The competition in the state tournament proved to be too stiff for Greenwich, though, as it went 1-2 and was eliminated.

Greenwich lost its opening game to Newtown, 5-0, but recovered to win its first losers' bracket game over Beth-Wood, 10-1. But Bethel rolled over Greenwich in their next game, 10-5, and sent Greenwich home after a successful season.

In Greenwich's lone win of the tournament, it took a commanding 7-0 lead after scoring six runs in the second inning against Beth-Wood. The biggest blow was a three-run home run by left fielder Joey Lanni. Greenwich's pitching cruised the rest of the way, as starter Connor Langan and reliever Alex Burch combined for eight strikeouts in six innings, allowing only one hit.

Danbury won the state championship and will play in the New England regional tournament in Dover, N.H.
