Greenwich Reaches First V-Ball Final

Greenwich High's sports teams have had success in state competition in virtually every sport over the years. The girls volleyball team, however, has never reached a state final. Until Thursday, that is.

The fourth-seeded Cardinals smashed No. 9 Cheshire, 3-0, by scores of 25-13, 25-14 and 25-16 in Thursday's Class LL semifinal at Fairfield Warde. Greenwich will meet Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference rival Fairfield Ludlowe in Saturday's championship game at 7 p.m. at Glastonbury High School.

Greenwich (21-2) defeated Ludlowe, 3-1, during the regular season. The Falcons turned the tables on Greenwich in the semifinals of the FCIAC playoffs, posting a 3-1 victory. Ludlowe, the No. 6 seed, advanced to the championship with a 3-2 win Thursday over No. 2 Mercy. Greenwich's only other loss this season was a 3-1 setback to Darien. Greenwich has not dropped a set in three state tournament games. No. 9 Cheshire had been a tournament giant killer, taking out No. 8 Newtown, the SouthWest Conference champion, in five games and top-seeded Southington, also in five games.

Senior Rebecca Schreff led Greenwich in Thursday's win. She collected 14 service points, five aces and 16 digs. Christine Lo recorded 28 assists, while Mirei Kato had eight digs and 10 service points and Michelle Vogt had seven kills and six service points.
