Greenwich Man Sets Records on the Links

PURCHASE, N.Y. – George Tischler of Greenwich played the round of golf he has been aiming for this past weekend. The Manhattanville College graduate came away with two records at the Hamilton College Fall Invitational. Tischler became the first Manhattanville male golfer to break 70 – a two-under par 69 – and his two-day total of 144 is a program best. Tischler led the team to the title last weekend in Clinton, N.Y. Manhattanville shot 305 on day one and 300 on day two to finish at 605, five strokes better than Williams College. It was the second consecutive year the Valiants won the title. Even though Tischler had a record-setting performance, he chose to discuss the team. “We came into the tournament with high expectations,” said Tischler, who is studying for his master’s in sports business management. “We thought we shot ourselves out of it after the first day. We were only six back, so we felt we could shoot lower because we always shoot well on the second day.” The Valiants accomplished this. When they completed their Saturday round, the team discussed their performance. “We felt we put a lot of pressure on ourselves on Saturday,” said Tischer, 23, who has a bachelor of arts from Manhattanville. “None of us had fun that first day. We all hit balls after our round Saturday, and something just clicked with us. “We went in with a different mindset on the second day. We wanted to loosen it up, and we looked at it like it was match play between us and Williams.” Manhattanville responded with an excellent start Sunday. “A couple of us were under par,” Tischler said. Tischler was under par Saturday at Yahnundasis Golf Club. He secured his 69 with a birdie on the par-four 18th hole. Tischler said he hit a driver and seven iron to within 12 feet of the hole. “At the beginning of the year I was struggling because I didn’t play much golf this summer,” Tischler said. “During the week of practice I was hitting the ball well. I played well in the practice round. I felt I could go low if I would putt better. “Coming down the stretch, I was hoping to get rid of the 70 because I had done it twice this year.”
