Greenwich Girls Take 2nd at League Track Meet

GREENWICH, Conn. – Greenwich High's girls track and field team battled until the final event before falling to Darien in the race for the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference track and field championship Tuesday at Danbury High School.

Darien won with 115 points, while Greenwich took second with 90. The Cardinals last won the league title in 1984. Greenwich’s boys took third with 57 points as Staples ended Danbury’s 11-year stranglehold on the title. The Wreckers won with 147.5 points, followed by Danbury with 82.5. Ryan Gelcius won two throwing events for the Cardinals.

Senior Abby Markowitz had a terrific meet for Greenwich, anchoring the winning 4 x 800 relay in the opening race of the day. She also won the 800 and took second in the 1,600 in a brilliant stretch duel against Fairfield Warde sophomore Cate Allen. Markowitz ran 5:12.95, while Allen won in 5:12.88.

Greenwich also won the 4 x 400 relay in 3:59.8, the first time this year the Cardinals have beaten 4:00. The winning runners were Cait Wright, Isabella Narvaez, Naomi Leeds and Amanda Michaud. Kathryn Bernstein, Mia Bonanno and Elizabeth Markowitz joined Abby Markowitz on the winning 4 x 800  relay.

Leeds finished fourth in the 200, while Elizabeth Markowitz and Michaud went 3-4 in the 400. Wright was third in 300 hurdles. In field events, Claire D’Etiveaud took second in the high jump, and Lindsay Alfano was sixth in the triple jump. Alessandra Herrera added a fourth in the discus, and Amanda Onofrio was fourth in the javelin.

Ryan Kelly won the 400 for the boys in 49.79, the only runner to break 50 seconds. He also took second in the 100 and 200. Gelcius won the javelin and discus and took second in the shot put.
