Greenwich's girls lacrosse team put forth a valiant effort Tuesday night before losing to undefeated Wilton, 17-10, at Kristine Lilly Field. The Cardinals fell behind 6-0 in the first 12 minutes, rallied to get within 6-4, only to see the Warriors run away with four quick goals early in the second half to take a commanding 11-4 lead.
"We dug ourselves a hole early in the game that we couldn't get out of,'' Greenwich coach Caitlin Keane said. I don't think the score reflects how hard my team played."
Emma Christie scored four goals for Greenwich, and Shannon Colligan added a pair. Greenwich fell to 8-4 overall and 4-4 in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference.
After Wilton struck for the early lead, the Cardinals started their comeback. Colligan's goal with 1:57 left got the Cardinals within 6-4. Wilton's Tegan Helms, who scored six goals, scored at the buzzer to end the first half and give the Warriors a 7-4 lead.
Wilton re-established control early in the second, scoring four goals in the first 5:11 to make it 11-4. Greenwich kept cutting into Wilton's lead thereafter. Unfortunately, each time the Warriors had a response.
"That goal at the end of the half didn't seem like affected us too much,'' Keane said. I thought we kept playing hard."
Greenwich hosts Danbury Thursday in a key FCIAC game, and then finishes the regular season with games against Scarsdale, N.Y., on Monday and Stamford on Tuesday.
