Greenwich Girls Fall to Powerful Wilton

Greenwich's girls lacrosse team put forth a valiant effort Tuesday night before losing to undefeated Wilton, 17-10, at Kristine Lilly Field. The Cardinals fell behind 6-0 in the first 12 minutes, rallied to get within 6-4, only to see the Warriors run away with four quick goals early in the second half to take a commanding 11-4 lead.

"We dug ourselves a hole early in the game that we couldn't get out of,'' Greenwich coach Caitlin Keane said. “I don't think the score reflects how hard my team played."

Emma Christie scored four goals for Greenwich, and Shannon Colligan added a pair. Greenwich fell to 8-4 overall and 4-4 in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference.

After Wilton struck for the early lead, the Cardinals started their comeback. Colligan's goal with 1:57 left got the Cardinals within 6-4. Wilton's Tegan Helms, who scored six goals, scored at the buzzer to end the first half and give the Warriors a 7-4 lead.

Wilton re-established control early in the second, scoring four goals in the first 5:11 to make it 11-4. Greenwich kept cutting into Wilton's lead thereafter. Unfortunately, each time the Warriors had a response.

"That goal at the end of the half didn't seem like affected us too much,'' Keane said. “I thought we kept playing hard."

Greenwich hosts Danbury Thursday in a key FCIAC game, and then finishes the regular season with games against Scarsdale, N.Y., on Monday and Stamford on Tuesday.
