Just two days after a strong offensive performance in a 45-41 win over Wilton, Greenwich High's girls basketball struggled to put points on the board in a 33-24 loss to Staples. The loss spoiled the return of coach Danielle Morgan, who returned the team after delivering a baby on Thanksgiving Day.
"I saw some good things and some bad things,'' Morgan said. "I think we can improve on our defense and shot selection. That's what we're going to focus on."
The game began an hour late because of transportation problems from Greenwich to Westport. The Wreckers seemed more relaxed early, jumping out to a 12-10 lead after the first quarter and 21-14 at half. Staples built its biggest lead, 28-19, after three quarters.
The Cardinals got within 28-24 with 3:47 left, but that was as close as they got. Turnovers and empty trips cost Greenwich. Staples shot just five-of-12 from the foul line in the fourth quarter and did not make a field goal. Greenwich shot just two-for-12, committed six turnovers and got to the line just once.
Tori Dobson scored 14 points to lead Greenwich. She had 10 in the first half. Kierra King scored six points as just four Cardinals scored. Caroline Barrett, who hit five 3-pointers in the win against Greenwich, was held scoreless. Greenwich had 19 turnovers, which short-circuited the attempted comeback.
"Turnovers have killed us in the past,'' Morgan said. "We really need to cut down on those. That can make the difference in the game."
