GREENWICH, Conn. Greenwich senior Abigail Markowitz finished the season undefeated against Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference runners Tuesday to lead the Cardinals to two wins in a quad meet at Tods Point.
Greenwich defeated Darien, 27-28, and Fairfield Warde, 26-29 in the four-team meet. The Cardinals lost to Wilton, 26-31. Greenwichs boys also went 2-1, beating Wilton, 22-39, and Warde, 27-30. The Cardinals lost to Greenwich, 15-47.
Markowitz, a senior running cross country for the first time, cruised through the 4,000-meter course in 16:17. She won by 13 seconds over Dariens Grace Loh.
Greenwichs Sarah Fountain finished third overall in 16:33, followed by Elizabeth Markowitz (13th, 17:23), Jennifer Goggin (18th, 17:43) and Kana Jitsuno (19th, 17:52).
With the two wins, Greenwich finishes the regular-season 15-3, the first time in many years the Cardinals have accumulated that many victories, head coach Bill Mongovan said. The Cardinals figure to be one of five teams in contention for the team title at the league championship race on Oct. 20 at New Canaans Waveny Park. Darien - which entered Tuesdays meet undefeated - should contend for the title along with Ridgefield, Fairfield Warde and Wilton.
For the boys, Daniel Wilbanks (eighth, 16:55) led Greenwich. The rest of the teams top five included Andrew Jarombek (13th, 17:09); Ross Lodato (18th, 17:25); John Sulich (19th, 17:26); and Spencer Helmrich (20th, 17:27). Complete results are available on clubct.org
