Greenwich Girl Finishes Unbeaten in League

GREENWICH, Conn. – Greenwich senior Abigail Markowitz finished the season undefeated against Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference runners Tuesday to lead the Cardinals to two wins in a quad meet at Tod’s Point.

Greenwich defeated Darien, 27-28, and Fairfield Warde, 26-29 in the four-team meet. The Cardinals lost to Wilton, 26-31. Greenwich’s boys also went 2-1, beating Wilton, 22-39, and Warde, 27-30. The Cardinals lost to Greenwich, 15-47.

Markowitz, a senior running cross country for the first time, cruised through the 4,000-meter course in 16:17. She won by 13 seconds over Darien’s Grace Loh.

Greenwich’s Sarah Fountain finished third overall in 16:33, followed by Elizabeth Markowitz (13th, 17:23), Jennifer Goggin (18th, 17:43) and Kana Jitsuno (19th, 17:52).

With the two wins, Greenwich finishes the regular-season 15-3, the first time in many years the Cardinals have accumulated that many victories, head coach Bill Mongovan said. The Cardinals figure to be one of five teams in contention for the team title at the league championship race on Oct. 20 at New Canaan’s Waveny Park. Darien - which entered Tuesday’s meet undefeated - should contend for the title along with Ridgefield, Fairfield Warde and Wilton.

For the boys, Daniel Wilbanks (eighth, 16:55) led Greenwich. The rest of the team’s top five included Andrew Jarombek (13th, 17:09); Ross Lodato (18th, 17:25); John Sulich (19th, 17:26); and Spencer Helmrich (20th, 17:27). Complete results are available on clubct.org
