RYE, N.Y. Members of the Greenwich High School football team made a detour on their way to the official start of summer practice Wednesday. They stopped by the Westchester Country Club to volunteer as course guides for the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship.
One of our captains parents wanted to get 25 of us to volunteer for the tournament and they would donate $5,000 for our program, Bob Decker said. I dont play golf, but its interesting being out here on the course. You see a lot of great players.
The Constellation is the fifth and last major event of the season on the Seniors Tour, and Westchester Country Club is hosting it for the first time. The player list includes such PGA greats as Tom Watson, Ben Crenshaw, Fred Couples and defending champion Mark OMeara.
Decker and teammates Jim Ferraro and William Cecio have joined more than 700 volunteers working the tournament this week. Im not that good at all, but I like to golf, Cecio said. It is quiet here today, but its fun to see some of the older golfers like Freddie Couples and Tom Watson, who I know about. Seeing them play live and not on TV is really interesting.
Ferraro and Decker were on duty along the ropes as Watson and his group played the Pro-Am tournament. Golf is a tough game to play, Ferraro said. Doing this helps the tournament and our team, so its good.
Individual daily and weekly tickets to the tournament are available at www.ceseniorplayers.com or by calling (914) 481-5900.
