The win kept Greenwich unbeaten at 6-0.
The Cardinals needed just six plays to go 58 yards to the end zone on the opening drive of the game. O’Neil found Joe Kelly from 9 yards out to get the Greenwich offense rolling.
Westhill managed to keep the score close halfway through the second quarter with a field goal, but the Cardinals were just getting warmed up.
O’Neil found a wide-open Kelly again, this time from 13 yards, to put Greenwich up 14-3. Alex McMurray then got a big rushing day started on the next Cardinal drive, racking up 42 yards on five rushes. He capped the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run.
But the back-breaker for Greenwich came on the final play of the half. McMurray collected a short shovel pass on a fake field goal, then ripped through six Westhill defenders to the end zone for a gritty 22-yard touchdown as time expired in the half.
O’Neil really found his rhythm in the second half, connecting with Vincent Ferraro on touchdown passes of 52 and 56 yards. The senior quarterback also rushed for a 14-yard touchdown, which he joked after the game was a “sign of the apocalypse.”
“Our receivers are tenacious and they will not go down when they catch the ball,” O’Neil said. “I had a few bad reads early, but Coach [Albonizio] got me going. He knows how to fire me up. The team is really rolling right now.”
Taylor Olmstead and Shawn Dunster each had an interception on defense for the Cardinals.
Greenwich (6-0) is now averaging 48 points per game.
The Cardinals travel to Norwalk to take on Brien McMahon High at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2.
