In an up-and-down season for the Greenwich High School field hockey team, a satisfying win over Norwalk on Wednesday night may be just what they needed. The Cardinals have fielded an almost completely new squad from the 2009 state championship, and the inexperience has showed. But Greenwich capitalized on its opponents' mistakes and got help from its big guns, Claire Feeney and Caroline Keaveney, to win, 4-1.
"It was good to build an early lead, but we knew we couldn't let up," Feeney said. "We knew we had to keep scoring and scoring."
Greenwich took advantage of two early penalties, and Feeney found herself in the right place to knock home the game's first two scores. Norwalk briefly climbed back into the game when Kayla Kavanagh fed a nice pass to Mia Kutrubis, who put it in the corner of the net.
But Norwalk's threat was quickly erased, as Keaveney scored four minutes later from a slick pass by Katey Hopper. Keaveney also assisted a minute later on a vicious slap shot goal by Liz Stillman. Keaveney said the offensive burst was exactly what the team needed as the regular season winds down.
"We really needed this win," Keaveney said. "Claire's goals really helped us and built our confidence. She always seems to be in right place for one of my passes. I can always count on her, and it's nice to have a teammate like that."
Greenwich is 6-4-1 on the year with four games remaining. The Cardinals host Ridgefield on Friday.
