Greenwich Defense Hangs Tough in Defeat

The Greenwich High School field hockey team should take Friday's loss to the juggernaut that is Darien in context. Knowing the Blue Wave is capable of putting 8 or 9 goals on the scoreboard, losing 3-0 to the four-time defending Class M champions can be taken as something of a victory.

The defense did well to limit the damage of a Darien team that has outscored opponents a staggering 90-3 this season. Caroline Keaveney and Rachel Stinebaugh did a superb job keeping the Blue Wave from running up the  score.

As is Darien's standard operating procedure, it dominated time of possession, keeping Greenwich out of the offensive zone. Darien racked up a 15-0 advantage on penalty corners, getting all three of its goals off the set plays. Greenwich could only manage two shots on goal to Darien's 17.

Greenwich fell to seventh place in the FCIAC (6-5-1-1)  entering the final week of the regular season. The Cardinals will travel to Trumbull on Wednesday for their final game to try to lock up one of the final spots in the FCIAC tournament. Greenwich is tied with Staples and holds a one-point advantage over Danbury.
