Greenwich Cruises to State Swim Title

Several teams felt they were in a good position to challenge perennial powerhouse Greenwich High School before the start of the boys swimming state open at Yale on Saturday. But a year after being upset by Pomperaug High School, the Cardinals were not about to let that happen.

Greenwich grabbed first place in only two races but a disappointing showing by New Canaan swung the deciding points the Cardinals' way. Greenwich took home the school's 24th state open title with 388 points.

Michael Dustin anchored the Cardinals, as he has done all year, taking home Greenwich's lone gold medal in an individual race. Dustin, bound for U.S. Military Academy at West Point after graduation, came in first in the 100-yard butterfly at 49.99 seconds. That time was just 0.25 seconds short of the state record.

Greenwich put the exclamation point on its victory in the final race, crushing past challengers in the 400-yard freestyle relay. In a change of pace for Greenwich, head coach Terry Lowe had Dustin lead off the final relay instead of finishing it. The order did not seem to matter, as all four swimmers tore through the water. Eric Minowitz closed the race nearly two lengths ahead of second-place finisher New Canaan. At one point in the race, Greenwich held more than a four-second lead.

Other top medal winners for Greenwich included a third place finish for Dustin in the 50-yard freestyle at 21.56 seconds, a second place finish for Andrew Dillinger in the 100-yard freestyle at 46.70 and a third-place finish for Dillinger in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:41.79. Earlier in the week, Connor Brisson took second place in the diving finals with a score of 506.75.

Greenwich topped Darien with 321 points, Ridgefield with 312 and New Canaan with 306.
