GREENWICH, Conn. Alex Moeser scored or assisted on Greenwichs final four goals, as the Cardinals boys lacrosse team edged a banged up Brien McMahon squad, 9-7, for a crucial conference victory on Tuesday evening.
McMahon was missing four players, including its two top scorers and defenders, and it showed throughout the contest. The Senators played like they didnt know each other at all, with dozens of errant passes falling into the laps of Greenwich players. McMahon racked up nine unforced turnovers in the offensive zone, giving the Cardinals a definitive edge in time of possession.
This definitely was a big win for us, Moeser said. Our freshmen really stepped up today. We have a very young team so we just needed to calm down in that fourth quarter and execute.
But Senators sophomore goalie Josh Miller kept his team in the game with 17 saves on the night. Miller stymied Greenwich in the third quarter and did not allow a goal, despite a dominant effort by the Cardinals.
McMahon cut Greenwichs lead to 7-6 with 6:41 to play, but Moeser quickly put any thoughts of a comeback to rest. He scored a pair of unassisted goals less than two minutes apart to lock up the hard-fought win for Greenwich.
There are times Moeser can just take over a game. When you have a guy like that anything can happen, Greenwich head coach Scott Bulkley said. It was almost like a basketball game tonight where we just had to keep shooting and we finally got some in.
Greenwich jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter on goals by Moeser, Decker Curran and JP Carey. Curran and Will Gibian finished with a pair of goals, while James Paradise added one.
Greenwich (6-4, 5-2 conference) travels to take on the conferences top team, Darien, on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
