Thursday night's boys lacrosse game between Greenwich and Wilton high schools was so evenly matched, it could have gone either way. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the final result tipped in Wilton's favor.
Coming out of a timeout, Wilton scrambled to the Greenwich net in a final, furious 19-second play. Michael Farina fed the ball to Sean Carroll, who one-timed it into the net to sink Greenwich, 9-8, with two seconds remaining.
"When this team works together they can have one of the most dangerous offenses in the state," Greenwich head coach Scott Bulkley said. "When they start doing things on their own and take bad shots on a good goalie, you get what you saw tonight."
The last-second goal erased a valiant comeback by the Cardinals after they trailed by three goals in the third quarter. The Warriors had built a 7-4 lead, but Eric Foote scored and Andrew Feeney found the net twice in less than four minutes to bring the game even.
Greenwich's midfielders then lowered the boom on Wilton, using big hits to keep the game close. Wilton and Greenwich traded goals in the fourth, with Alex Marcus tying the game at eight with 2:12 remaining. Greenwich could not put the finishing touch on the comeback, however.
Wilton's Chris Nugent stole the ball with 19 seconds remaining, prompting an immediate time-out call by Warriors head coach John Wiseman. The play Wilton orchestrated worked perfectly and sank the Cardinals.
Greenwich will try to bounce back from the tough loss when it hosts Staples on Saturday. That game faces off at 11 a.m.
