GREENWICH, Conn. The Greenwich Senior Legion baseball teams bats heated up along with the weather Thursday in a battle for sole possession of first place in Connecticut Zone Four. The Cannons rapped out 13 hits against Ridgefield, including four from Cameron Fennell, in a convincing 8-1 victory.
All season weve been getting great pitching and good defense, and now the bats are starting to roll, Greenwich manager Mike Abate said. It was good to see them come out from a lot of our hitters. This team is going to be hard to beat if we hit the ball like this consistently.
Harry Polak battled through the 90-plus degree heat to a gritty complete-game victory, striking out five in seven innings. The only run he allowed came on a wild pitch in the fifth, lowering Greenwichs team ERA to a minuscule 1.99.
In the sweltering sun, Polak said that before the game he doubted he would be as effective as he was on the mound. I was hoping to go a complete game, but I thought Id give up at least three or four runs. It was really hot those first two innings, he said. We knew it was a big game today and we really came through.
Greenwich quickly jumped on Ridgefield starting pitcher Daniel Greenberg, scoring all the runs the Cannons would need in the top of the first. After a lead-off single by Dylan Callahan, Taylor Olmstead drove in his teammate on a booming triple.
Fennell, who was moved up to the clean-up spot, began his monster night with an RBI single to drive in Olmstead. The Greenwich third baseman finished the night 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.
We started [Fennell] out in the five and six spot, but hes given us some really big hits, so we moved him up, Abate said. Hes really seeing the ball well.
Olmstead, Brendan Hardin and Steve Monik each had multi-hit games. Monik also scored twice.
Greenwich (9-2) now stands alone atop Zone 4 with a half-game lead over second-place Stamford. The Cannons play a doubleheader against Bridgeport Legion on Saturday.
