Greenwich Baseball Stays Unbeaten at Halfway Mark

GREENWICH, Conn. – The burden of being undefeated doesn't seem to faze the Greenwich High baseball team. Greenwich downed Norwalk, 9-3, on Tuesday to remain unbeaten at the halfway point of the season. Yet the pressure always seems to be on the Cardinals’ opponents.

That was evident in a 3-3 ballgame heading into the top of the seventh. The Cardinals simply put the ball in play and everything went their way. Norwalk committed three errors in the inning and Greenwich pounced on the Bears’ mistakes for six runs.

“It’s nice to be undefeated, but we’re just trying to win the game we’re in,” Greenwich centerfielder David Berdoff said. “We’ve got a lot of confidence and everyone is working hard.”

Berdoff had been the main source of Greenwich’s offense until the seventh inning explosion, hitting a solo homer in the first and driving in all three Cardinal runs to that point. Until the final frame, Greenwich’s four-through-nine hitters were a collective 2-for-16. But the Cardinals got baserunners and key hits when they needed them most.

Norwalk proved to be one of Greenwich’s peskiest opponents of the season before its wheels came off in the seventh. Cardinals starter Casey Gaynor struggled with his off-speed pitches, going to his fastball more than usual.

Norwalk eventually caught up with the pitch and started launching deep fly balls that would have left just about any field other than City Hall Field in Norwalk. Rich Henderson finally got one out, crushing a two-run home run over the center field fence to tie the game at 2-2. Henderson tied the game again in the sixth on an RBI single.

“It wasn’t one of my best outings, but I feel like I gave my team a chance to win,” Gaynor said. “We feel like if we can get the leadoff runner on, we’re great at manufacturing runs.”

Cardinals closer Kyle Dunster shut the door in the seventh inning yet again. He has yet to allow a run this season out of the bullpen.
