Rain Stops; Greenwich Baseball Punches Ticket to Finals

GREENWICH, Conn. – It took nearly 24 hours and two venues to decide the baseball conference semifinal between top-ranked Greenwich and Brien McMahon. But ultimately, the time and place did not matter for the undefeated Cardinals.

The offense from Thursday at Harbor Yard held up in Friday’s continuation of the rain-suspended game finished at Darien High, as Greenwich edged McMahon, 1-0. With its perfect season still alive, Greenwich will battle Trumbull for the conference championship back at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Dylan Callahan scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the first inning on a double steal back on Thursday in Bridgeport. He was also throwing a no-hitter through four innings when the game was called due to rain.

The Greenwich senior did not continue his outing Friday, but he did make a diving catch to end the game.

The suspension favored McMahon’s hitters, who were baffled by Callahan. It also allowed the Senators to trot out their ace, Bryan Daniello.

But Greenwich’s Ryan Marks picked up where Callahan left off, denying McMahon a run and securing Greenwich’s eighth shutout of the season. He scattered three hits in three innings of relief and stranded the tying run on third.
