Greenwich Athletes Win State Track Titles

GREENWICH, Conn. – Greenwich’s Robert Gelcius won two individual events while Abby Markowitz won one race and helped a relay take first place at Wednesday’s Class LL track and field championships at Manchester High School.

Gelcius won the shot put and javelin for the Cardinals, who finished eighth with 40 points. Markowitz won the 800  and was part of the victorious 4 x 400 relay. Greenwich’s girls finished fifth with 46.5 points.

Gelcius won the shot put with a toss of 49 feet, 3 inches. That distance was much farther than his seeded distance of 46 feet, 10 inches. In the javelin, he won with a throw of 167 feet, 4 inches. He also added a fifth in the discus. Ryan Kelly took second in the 200 and 400 for Greenwich.

Markowitz won the 800 in 2:15.66. She ran on the winning 4 x 400 relay with her sister Elizabeth, Naomi Leeds and Cate Wright. Leeds took eighth in the 200, and Elizabeth Markowitz was fourth in the 400. Wright was fifth in the 300 hurdles.

Greenwich also was third in the 4 x 100 relay, and second in the 4 x 800 relay. In field events, Claire D’Etiveaud took sixth in the high jump.
