Greenwich Aquatics Win Water Polo Tourney

The Greenwich Aquatics girls water polo team took the top spot in the Third Annual Women’s Spring Invitational Tournament at the YMCA of Greenwich, defeating the top seven high school-age teams in the East.

“Our girls were a force to be reckoned with,” coach Ulmis Iordache said in a statement. “Our coaching staff was watching the girls dominate the competition with their determination and sheer athleticism. I know they will only continue to work hard and make headlines this season.”

The tournament, which took place the weekend of March 25, brought out players from Connecticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. The Greenwich Aquatics, playing out of the YMCA of Greenwich, were victorious over the Cumberland Valley High School Eagles, the 2010 Pennsylvania State Champions, who hadn’t lost a game in almost two years. During the weekend, the Greenwich team beat them twice.

Players for Greenwich included goalie Emma Soderquist, Madi Andres, Abby Butcher, Erin Dunstan, Taylor Dunstan, Sam Salvo, Quinn Scannell, Lauren Shea and Lizzie Watson. Top scorers were seniors Taylor Dunstan and Watson. Andres and Shea were key assist makers. Scannell, the only middle school player on the squad, didn’t let her age or small stature get in the way as she scored two goals against the Eagles.

Next up for the team is a home game at the YMCA against Greenwich High School on April 11 at 6:30 p.m.
