GHS Water Polo Dominates Start of Season

The Greenwich High School boys water polo team looks like it will dominate the competition once again this season. Head coach Terry Lowe leads another team certain to be ahead of the curve in its quest for an Eastern Interscholastic Championship.

Greenwich kicked off its 2010 season in convincing fashion, going 4-0 at the McDowell Invitational in Erie, Pa., this past weekend. Greenwich's only challenge of the tournament was against Wilson High School from West Lawn, Pa., holding off a comeback, 12-9. The rest of its matches were routs against North Allegheny High from Pittsburgh, 19-2, Cathedral Prep from Erie, 18-6, and McDowell High, 19-3.

Senior tri-captain Matt Weber showed he will be the offensive leader of this team, scoring an incredible 17 goals on the weekend, including six in one game. J Whelan, a junior, had four goals. Seniors Clayton Hardman and Kevin Lane as well as sophomore Robert Peterson all had hat tricks over the weekend.

Greenwich will head to Reading, Pa., for the Beast of the East Tournament on Sept. 24 to 25. The tournament is considered the biggest water polo tournament on the East Coast and will feature 28 teams from four states.
