Geithner, Allen Pace Field in Greenwich Race

OLD GREENWICH, Conn. – Peter Geithner ran away from the rest of the field of 296 finishers and Tara Allen was the female champion during the recent B*Cured Point Perspective at Tod's Point in Old Greenwich.

The 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) Point Perspective cross country race through roads and trails was the opening event in the Volvo of Stamford Greenwich Cup series of 10 races. There was also an accompanying Kids Half Mile race in which 89 youngsters participated.

Proceeds from both races were donated to B*Cured, a Greenwich-based organization funding investigative research to cure brain cancer.

Geithner, 18, a superb distance runner at Brunswick School who plans to run for the Dartmouth College cross country team this fall, won in 15 minutes, 48 seconds.

The top four runners consisted of teenagers. Jake Matthews, 18, was runner-up in 18:34. Andrew Jarombek, 17, and William Bercuk, 15, were both one second behind Matthews.

The runners who finished in places 5 to 14 were Alejandro Pasten (18:41), Louis Csak (18:57), Kevin Barrett (19:00), Sebastien Oe (19:01), Matt Yardis (19:01), Phil Fischer (19:10), Adrian Stroie (19:14), Bruce Samer (19:28), Marc Wolpers (19:28) and Paul Westhart (19:34).

Allen was the fastest woman and 15th overall with a 19:39. Brooke Garden was the runner-up female and 20th overall with a 19:45, while Kim Chalfin was the third female and 22nd overall with a 19:57.

Ryan Lynch, 12, won the Kids Half Mile in 3:10. Meghan Lynch, 8, was runner-up in 3:20. Chris Dunn, 11, placed third with a 3:25. Claudia Pompa, 11, was fourth in 3:29 and Jaimie Hessor, 9, was fifth with a 3:42.

The second event of the series is the Volvo of Stamford Greenwich Cup Biathlon at 7 a.m. May 6 at Tod's Point. The biathlon begins with a 2.5-mile run, followed by a 10-mile bicycle ride and another 2.5-mile run. The entry fees are $45 pre-entry and $55 on the day of the race.
