The Greenwich Flame eighth-grade boys basketball team faced one of its stiffest challenges of the year in Sunday's road contest against the Danbury Police Athletic League team. Danbury found out, however, the Flame have more than a few answers for whatever test are thrown at them.
Griffin Tiedy scored 18 points while Austin Longi and Billy O'Malley added 15 as the Flame turned back Danbury, 68-57. The Flame are now 27-6 overall and 7-0 in the Fairfield County Basketball League.
Greenwich led 20-16 after the first quarter and 43-28 at halftime. O'Malley scored 13 points in the first half as Greenwich seemed ready to roll to another victory.
Danbury roared out of the gate in the third period with a 9-0 run to get back into the game. A three-pointer by Longi with 3:01 left in the third ended the surge. Danbury was within four, 48-44, after three periods.
Danbury trailed 50-47 early in the third period before a 6-0 run by the Flame gave them some breathing room. Greenwich led 62-55 before pulling away in the final three minutes. Longi and Tiedy scored 15 of Greenwich's 20 points in the final quarter.
"We were a little sluggish at the start,'' coach Dom Borchetta said. "We picked it up with our defense in the second half and that was the difference."
Longi, a terrific point guard, took control in the second half with 11 points. He also made several nice passes that led to easy baskets for Greenwich.
Also on the weekend, Greenwich defeated New Canaan, 71-42, in a nonleague game and Ridgefield, 63-42, in another FCBL contest. Greenwich also fell to East Coast Skills, 46-31, in a St. Joseph League contest.
