GREENWICH, Conn. The Greenwich High School field hockey has gotten off to a rough 1-3 start. Even though the Cardinals lost 2-1 to undefeated Wilton (6-0) on Wednesday, Greenwich played its best game yet and might have turned the corner.
I know what our girls are capable of. Today they brought and showed the real team, head coach Ally Orrico said. I have complete faith in this team. I told the girls that it would be great to get a win, but Im focused on them playing 60 full minutes of good field hockey.
Greenwich had to fight from behind early, as Wiltons Joanne Nazareth put the Warriors up 1-0 less than four minutes in. The Cardinals struggled to get any offensive momentum in the first half, as Wilton rarely left the Greenwich zone. Hannah Riney added a second goal with 6:38 to play in the half.
The momentum shifted in Greenwichs favor in the second half, as the Cardinals were finally able to get a shot on goal. Claire Feeney made it count, slapping a 12-yard shot past the Wilton keeper, Lizette Roman-Johnson.
Greenwich created several opportunities in the second half, getting two penalty corners. The Cardinals managed one more shot on goal, but were denied by Roman-Johnson.
I think we made a statement with the way the girls played today, Orrico said. I think we can build on this. They brought all aspects of the game today for the first time this season.
Greenwich (1-3) will try to snap its losing streak on Saturday when it hosts Fairfield Ludlowe. The game is scheduled be the first played on fields that had been closed due to chemical concerns in the soil.
