The Volvo of Stamford Tour de Greenwich XXVI will take place at 7:30 a.m. Sunday starting at Greenwich High School. The out-and-back 20-mile bicycle race winds through the scenic roads in north Greenwich.
The event is tailored to cyclists of virtually all levels. It is a good race for the serious cyclists who race hard, and it is also a fun event for cyclists who want to enjoy a ride on a scenic course.
"It's a unique event in that it's for experienced racers and novices alike. You can either ride in one of the more competitive heats or ride in the latter heats and enjoy the camaraderie and scenery," Greenwich Cup series director Mickey Yardis said. "The course is in beautiful condition. There's been a lot of fresh asphalt paved on the roads the last couple years. I've been doing this for 25 years and, definitely, in the last two or three years there are some big stretches of Round Hill Road, Lake Avenue and Stanwich Road that have been recently paved. It rides beautifully."
Bryan Borgia won last year's race in 46:34. The top female was Robyn Passander at 57:01. There were 253 finishers last year, and 251 finishers in the 2008 event, which was won by Cos Cob 's Eneas Freyre in 46:32.
The early entry fee is $33. Cyclists may enter for $39 on the morning of the race.
