Cardinals Hope to Crash Staples' Party

It has been a lost season for the Greenwich High School football team, with perhaps its most difficult game ahead of them at 10 a.m. Thursday at Cardinal Stadium. The Cardinals (5-4) will take on Staples High School (8-1) on Thanksgiving Day for the sixth year in a row and will try to spoil the Wreckers' chances of getting into the Class LL playoffs.

Both teams are hungry for a win but for different reasons. The Staples players just missed out on the FCIAC title game and will be fighting for their playoff lives. Greenwich, meanwhile, will be fighting for its pride.

The Cardinals have not finished at .500 or worse in more than 40 years, but a loss to the Wreckers would cement their 2010 season as a losing campaign. The season has been a head-scratcher for Greenwich, playing better than its record suggests. The running game has been their bread and butter with a punishing trio of rushers in Mark Kelley, Shane Nastahowski and Mike Daly. The defense has been solid behind co-captain Ben Ceci and cornerback Joel Arroyo. Yet the Cardinals could not pull out the wins when it mattered most.

The season seemed doomed from the start when the Cardinals lost to Norwalk High School for the first time in 30 years. Certain victories were snatched away in the closing minutes in games against Trumbull and St. Joseph. Heartbreak from this season and last season will be on the minds of Greenwich players: The Cardinals lost to Staples on a last-minute field goal in last year's Thanksgiving matchup.
