Brunswick Rally Falls Short Against St. Luke's

The Brunswick baseball team did not want St. Luke's Division-I college recruit Jake Archey to beat them with his bat. But Archey beat the Bruins anyway, just by standing in the box.

Archey hit a monster home run in his first at-bat that easily traveled more than 380 feet. Brunswick head coach Johnny Montanez elected to intentionally walk Archey in his next two plate appearances. In the sixth, the bases were loaded and pitcher Bradley Wilpon had no choice but to pitch to Archey with the game tied at 6-6. Wilpon threw a wild pitch, and the go-ahead run scored.

It was a difficult loss for the Bruins after storming back from a 6-0 deficit. St. Luke's scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth, capped off by a grand slam by Kevin Cross. St. Luke's held on to win, 14-7, and clinch the third seed in the Fairchester Athletic Association tournament.

"I've seen that kid [Archey] hit seven baseballs, and they've all been over 300 feet," Montanez said. "When you have a kid that can change the scope of the game with one swing, you make sure the kid that's going to beat you nine out of 10 times doesn't beat you."

Brunswick ace Will Preziosi left after three innings after feeling a twinge in his arm. After a shaky fourth, Wilpon held off St. Luke's in the fifth. Brunswick sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the sixth, scoring five runs on three hits and a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

Brunswick might have had more runs if it had not been for some close plays at third. Twice the speedy Brendan Hardin was gunned down at third, once trying to steal and once trying to stretch a double into a triple.

"The boys did not give up. Everyone was motivating each other today," Montanez said. "We just had the raw end of the stick. We were hitting the ball really well, but right at them. They beat us with guys that were ready."

With the loss, Brunswick settles for the fourth seed in the FAA tournament. It will host Hopkins on Monday in the FAA quarterfinals.
