GREENWICH, Conn. The Brunswick baseball team keeps finding ways to win ballgames. Despite giving up the game-tying home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh, the Bruins battled back on Tuesday for four runs in the eighth to hold off a pesky St. Lukes team for a 10-6 extra-inning victory. It was Brunswicks seventh win in a row.
It was total team effort. Throughout this year every member of this team has shown tremendous heart, said Brunswick manager Johnny Montanez. They battle and they do exactly what we ask them to do.
Brunswick answered the home run quickly, sending nine men to the plate in the top of the eighth. The Bruins scored four runs on four hits and an error, all of which came with two outs.
Bradley Wilpon gave a strong outing for Brunswick, topping 100 pitches in six innings and striking out six. Jack Voigt earned the win in relief, despite giving up the game-tying home run to St. Lukes Dan Kagan.
It was tough to give up the home run. But our team did a good job battling back and showed a lot of character, Voigt said. We never get down ourselves throughout the game. Our guys always pick each other up.
Brunswick amassed 12 hits during the afternoon. Voigt led the Bears with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI in the eighth. Billy OMalley, Sam Fraser and Ryan Hardin each collected two hits. Brunswick also benefited from four St. Lukes errors.
Brunswick (7-2) faces its toughest test of the season Thursday when the team travels to New Haven to take on undefeated Hopkins.
