GREENWICH, Conn. The Greenwich High softball team out hit New Canaan on Monday, but the Cardinals could not get the crucial hit when they needed it most. New Canaans Ally Reilly outdueled Greenwichs Allison Kach, as the Cardinals fell, 1-0.
Kach allowed just three hits and struck out seven, but surrendered an RBI triple in the third to Cydney Ventura that proved to be the difference in the game. Reilly struck out ten for New Canaan, scattering five singles. She struck out the side in the seventh to end the game.
The loss was a setback in Greenwichs conference playoff hopes, but coach Mary Beth Fratello said she knows its an accomplishment for the program to even be in the playoff conversation at all.
Id rather lose 1-0 than some of the beatings weve taken in the past, she said. The last couple years we got our butts kicked, basically. But now were battling and were in pretty much every game.
Greenwichs best opportunity came in the fourth, when the Cardinals got three of their five hits. But Rams catcher Jordan Ventura gunned down a would-be base stealer at second and Reilly got Lindsey Bemis to ground out with runners at first and third.
The two teams entered Mondays game with identical records and tied for the eighth and final spot in the conference playoff standings. The win snapped a two-game winning streak for the Cardinals.
It has been feast or famine for Greenwich this season (9-6, 7-6 conference), having averaged 12 runs in its wins and two runs in its losses. The Cardinals travel to winless Bassick on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game.
