GREENWICH, Conn. Some students in Greenwich graduated from the Reading Champions program at the Boys & Girls Club after getting after-school literacy help over the past year.
This year, the club graduated more than 16 members of the Boys & Girls Club who worked with eight tutors in the program. I really love Reading Champions. I go every Monday, said second-grader Franklin Sousa-Filho.
The Reading Champions program, started by the United Way of Greenwich four years ago, collaborates with the Boys & Girls Club to improve the development of reading skills in an environment designed to help kids reach their potential.
More than 300 children in Greenwich receive help from more than 100 trained tutors at 11 after-school sites. The program follows a specific curriculum designed by literacy specialists from the Greenwich Public Schools to improve reading skills. A total of 96 percent of the children graduate from the program and meet proficiency goals in reading, according to the Boys & Girls Club.
The program is offered daily from mid-October through May, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. with a tutor assigned to work individually with each student for 30 minutes.
