Social studies teacher Carol Sutton was a leader in the creation of important diversity and anti-bullying programs at Greenwich High School. In addition to promoting peace education in her classroom, she helped turn a one-day workshop into what is now "Diversity Week."
Thursday she was honored by the Board of Education for receiving the Connecticut Education Association's 2010 Mahatma Gandhi-Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Award.
"It was an experience for me," said Sutton. "When I looked at the recognition list, I thought, 'I helped do all that?' "
Sutton teaches World Themes and Contemporary American classes at the high school. Thanks to her efforts, Diversity Week provides assemblies and speakers on topics such as gender, race, ethnicity and religion. It will be next April 4-8.The CEA award also recognizes her work bringing the Connecticut Anti-Defamation League's "Names Can Really Hurt Us" program to Greenwich High.
Schools Supt. Dr. Sidney A. Freund thanked Sutton for her work "collaborating with others to [promote] a heightened understanding and recognizing and respecting other cultural contexts and points of view."
"I could not have done everything without the support of the school and community," said Sutton, who has taught at the high school since 1987.
